‘Up West, Where the Fun Begins’

Jason Rayner has been putting lots of steps on his pedometer over the past month. Rayner has been a driving force in helping to get everything ready for the 91st annual Prince County Exhibition. The rural agricultural fair got underway in Alberton on Thursday morning and runs until Saturday. Rayner, who is in his first year at the helm of the exhibition’s board of directors, its 14th president, is relying heavily on his volunteer board and a cast of four summer workers to help get everything off on the right foot.

Changes to one of the buildings, he said, has allowed for afternoon kitchen party-style entertainment. There’s also entertainment in the arena, including the youth talent competition held Thursday, an adult singing competition on Friday and a Rising Star competition on Saturday.

An adult dance Saturday night will bring the fair to a close. It’s the second year for the exhibition dance and local band Old Doctor Young is once again providing the tunes.

Rayner lists Saturday afternoon’s matinee harness racing card featuring the Harry O’Brien Memorial Pace, Thursday’s Strongest Man in P.E.I. competition and Saturday morning’s parade as some of the other highlights. The theme of both the fair and the parade is, “Up West, Where the Fun Begins.”

There’s a horse pull Friday evening, a dog show on Saturday and judging of farm animals on Friday and Saturday. Midway enthusiasts have been getting primed for the exhibition for nearly two weeks as Hinchey’s Rides and Amusements set up early and used the time to touch up the paint on all of their rides. The Zipper is the midway’s new attraction this year. The midway opens at noon on Friday and Saturday.
