Make way for fire trucks and ambulances

- BY ALYSHA CAMPBELL

On Friday a mock vehicle stop will be taking place in New Perth to educate and enforce the proper response to an emergency vehicle with its sirens on and lights activated. RCMP are partnering with provincial government departments for the project that will take place on Route 3 at 10 a.m.

A police vehicle will be positioned during the vehicle stop with all lights activated; motorists passing will have their speed and actions observed. Drivers who do not abide by Section 115.1 of the Highway Traffic Act regarding emergency vehicles will be stopped and given a copy of the act and documentation regarding any offence committed. When an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind with lights on, drivers must slow down and pull over to the side of the road.

If the emergency vehicle is approaching on the other side of the road, protocol is to reduce speed and pull over, continuing to drive while giving the emergency vehicle more room. When an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road with lights activated, drivers are required to drive half the posted speed limit, when approaching or passing the vehicle (s).

If there are multiple lanes while passing the emergency vehicle, change lanes to keep your distance from the vehicle, if it can be done safely.

Motorists can also pull over and choose not to pass the emergency vehicle if they can stop safely and if parking isn’t restricted by law (no parking).
