Sentencing adjourned in forged prescription case

A Bonshaw woman who tried to use a forged prescription to get hydromorphone pills will be back before a judge in September for sentencing.

Alicia Dawn MacArthur, 20, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown recently on several matters.

During the proceedings, the court heard MacArthur went to a pharmacy in Charlottetown on May 10 with a forged prescription for 30 hydromorphone pills. The pharmacist was suspicious and contacted the doctor who supposedly signed the prescription. That doctor confirmed he didn’t write it. The court also heard MacArthur went to a Superstore in Charlottetown on Jan. 3 where someone saw her put several items into a shoulder bag without paying for them.

Those items, which had a value of $410.77, were recovered.

On Jan. 12, MacArthur went to Mel’s Petro Canada on St. Peters Road where an employee saw her on video taking an eight-pack of Molson Cold Shots without paying.

Those items had a value of $10.41 and weren’t recovered. MacArthur was also charged for missing two court dates. Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern said addiction has been an issue for MacArthur for several years, and she has been involved with the methadone program.

Although he adjourned sentencing on some of the matters until Sept. 20, Douglas did give MacArthur suspended sentences for the theft from the Superstore and one count of failing to attend court. MacArthur will be on probation for one year and must pay $200 in victim surcharges.
