Mudmen playing two games at Westisle

Against Enfield on Saturday afternoon

-

The P.E.I. Mudmen are heading west.

The Mudmen are showcasing games at both First and Second Division levels at Westisle Composite High School on Saturday in an attempt to expand to grow interest in rugby across the province.

The first game will feature the Mudmen’s A team battling the Enfield A team in a first-place battle at 1 p.m.

The Mudmen, who are 3-0 (won-lost), currently hold the edge over Enfield (3-1), but this matchup has huge implications for home-field advantage in the playoffs. The second game of the doubleheader features the firstplace Mudmen (3-0) taking on Enfield (2-2) in B Division play at 3 p.m.

The Mudmen have enjoyed a strong connection with West Prince over the years. Many of the Mudmen’s strongest players have originated from the west. For many years, veteran Dwayne Gilks was the engine in the Mudmen pack. Longtime Mudmen organizer Justin Ellis has been a pillar for many years, helping build the club and recruit players from West Prince. Many of those players will showcase their skills on Saturday. Matty Gallant is a speedy winger that is a threat every time he touches the ball. Brett Buote is a strong lock that uses skill in lineouts to dominate the competition.

Veteran Spencer Gallant is another Westisle product that commands that game at scrum half making big plays.

“It is a testament to the program and coaching at Westisle that have so many skilled and strong kids coming through the ranks,” said Phil Gallant, president and current player for the Mudmen. “We know travelling is a major challenge for some of these guys, but hopefully this may boost guys’ interest in joining the club or playing at UPEI in the fall.”
