Chevys rebound from first loss

Summerside visits Sherwood in first-place showdown

The Summerside Chevys bounced back.

After suffering their first loss of the season in the P.E.I. Bantam A Baseball League, a 9-7 setback to the Stratford A’s, the Chevys posted a 13-7 victory over the Charlottet­own Royals.

The Chevys travel to Sherwood this Thursday evening in a game that could potentiall­y decide first place. Both teams go into that game with only one loss each, with the Chevys handing Sherwood its only loss in the regular season – a nail biting 11-10 decision in Summerside earlier this season. Game time at MacRae Field is 6 p.m.

In Stratford, the A’s jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings, and held on in the highscorin­g affair.

Starter Tyson Laybolt, with relief help from Sam Birthistle, earned the win for the A’s. They combined to only allow eight hits while striking out eight. For the Chevys, starter Sam Gallant allowed six runs, but only two earned, in four innings of work. He gave up eight hits while striking out five.

Cory Evers pitched the last two innings, allowing two runs, one hit and he fanned three.

Laybolt (2-2, run scored, two RBIs) and James Thompson (2-3, run scored, RBI) led the A’s offensivel­y. For the Chevys, Kaden McInnis (3-3, two doubles, run scored, RBI) and Cameron Paynter (2-3, two triples, two runs scored, RBI) were the top batters.

In Summerside, the Royals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings, but the Chevys roared back. Summerside starter Kaden McInnis pitched three innings, allowing five runs on three hits while striking out four. Evers pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven.

Charlottet­own starter Jacob McPhee allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out seven in four innings of work, before being relieved by Ethan Nabuurs, who allowed six runs on four hits in two innings. Ty Newman (2-2, double, walk, three runs scored, RBI), Jordan Arsenault (2-3, walk, two runs, three RBIs), Evers (2-3, walk, three runs scored, RBI) and Paynter (2-3, two RBI).

For Charlottet­own, Ethan Bethell (3-4, three RBIs) and McPhee (1-3, two RBIs) were the top batters.
