Festival for forests
Orwell hosts its second Festival of Forests Sunday
The Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is holding its second annual Festival of Forests Sunday.
The festival will be a familyfriendly fundraising event with children’s activities, guided walks, food and short workshops. There will also be a silent auction featuring items generously donated by Island businesses, artists and artisans. The event will be held Aug. 27 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Macphail Homestead in Orwell.
For the past 26 years the award-winning Macphail Woods has been a centre for conservation, forest stewardship and environmental education.
A project of the Environmental Coalition of P.E.I., Macphail Woods started with a wildlife garden and native plant nursery, nature trails and forest restoration demonstration plots.
Over the past 26 years, the nursery has expanded, showcasing native trees, shrubs, ferns and wildflowers, attracting people from all over the Island. Its nature and forest management workshops are popular.
Between 100 and 200 children take part in weeklong “Sharing our love of nature” camps each summer. Macphail Woods also supports many community initiatives, working with schools, watershed groups and communities to plant trees and create healthy forests across the Island.
All funds raised through admission, donations, and the silent auction will go towards ongoing programs at Macphail Woods and in the broader community.
