The Salvation Army is celebrating a generous donation made to the Summerside Corps through the estate of Barbara “Blanche” Hogg two years to the date of her passing at the age of 96.
A veteran of the Second World War, accomplished athlete, sports enthusiast and a woman of faith, Hogg had a passion for giving and the work of The Salvation Army. After the war, she worked at the National Research Council in chemical warfare as a secretary, and was soon transferred to post-war planning in Ottawa. Discharged in 1946, Hogg returned to Summerside to work with the Department of Labour and at the same time, her successful golfing career ensued.
Over 50 years of golfing, she represented numerous women’s Maritime and national golf events winning more golf championships than any other female Island player during her era.
Along with many winning titles, she won the Provincial
Senior Ladies’ title and the Senior National Championship in British Columbia. In July 1976, she was inducted to the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame for golf and again in August 2012 as a member of the Summerside Crystal Sisters hockey team. Hogg was also an active community member and beloved family member of Dr. Robert Lund. Dr. Lund describes Hogg as “a top golfer in her era who played the game well into her eighties and a woman who donated to a number of charities including her church - Saint Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside.”
He added: “She loved The Salvation Army and we are pleased to present this generous donation to the Summerside Corps today.”
His sentiments were echoed by the Salvation Army’s divisional commander.
“We are very grateful for this generous gift and are happy to join Blanche’s family today as we remember her and her significant contributions to this community,” says Major Wade Budgell.
“This is a valuable contribution to the vital programs and services offered in Summerside, which give hope for today.”
