Cornwall driver notches five wins

- BY NICHOLAS OAKES

Saturday was a good night for Corey MacPherson.

The Cornwall driver had five wins at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. MacPherson opened and closed the 13-dash program with wins as Dustylanekazaam was a 2:02.3 winner for trainer Paul MacDonald of Cornwall in Race 1, followed by a lull in winner’s circle performances for the 28-year-old driver.

Jetta Flys was sent down the highway later on in the card for a 1:57.1 win for MacPherson and trainer Stephen Quinn of Stratford.

Then it was major upset time as Brodys Leona captured the $2,250 Fillies and Mares Open Pace in 1:59.2 at 16-1 odds, powering past last week’s winner, Good Luck Kathy, in the final strides.

Melissa Rennie trains Brodys Leona for owners Lisa Richards of Cornwall and Kerry and Emily Taylor of Stratford. Good Luck Kathy, driven by Jason Hughes, was second in the $2,250 event while Julep Hanover (Wade Myers) was third. The 5-6-4 triactor paid $922.45 for a $2 ticket. The MacPherson show continued after the Fillies and Mares Open Pace as Jetster was a 1:58.1 winner in a $1,400 event for trainer Marc Campbell. His fifth win came in the finale, with Painted Desert scoring in 1:57.1 for trainer Trevor Hicken of Montague.

Feature

The $2,400 evening feature had Nogreatmischief score a mild upset with trainer and co-owner Walter Cheverie in the bike for fellow owner John Thompson of Charlottetown. Adkins Hanover (MacPherson) laid down the early fractions of 27.2, 55.1 and 1:25.1, but gave way in the stretch for Nogreatmischief to be victorious. Rose Run Quest (Lenny Myers) was second and Forever Paradise (Gilles Barrieau) came third. The 4-2-3 triactor in that race paid out a healthy $497.40 for a $2 ticket.

The win was one of two on the card for Cheverie, who also won with JK Rocket in 1:59.2 for trainer Joe Smallwood of Stratford.

Jason Hughes had two winners as Pownal Bay Saul was a 1:57.1 winner for trainer Tom Weatherbie of Charlottetown, and Celebrate Your Bet was a 2:01.2 winner for trainer Nick Oakes of Warren Grove. It was one of two wins on the card for Oakes as Twin B Shadow (Ken Murphy) was also a 1:58.3 winner.

Ron Matheson made his presence felt in his return to the race bike as he converted a two-hole ride into a visit to the winner’s circle with Starcastic in 1:58.2 for trainer and son Jackie Matheson.

The elder Matheson had been out of competition since May, when he was injured in the race paddock.
