Chef Michael Smith hosting Summerside’s Fall Flavours event

- BY COLIN MACLEAN

Chef Michael Smith is cooking up some beef concoctions for the Beef and Blues Fall Flavours event coming up in Summerside.

P.E.I.’s food ambassador, chef Michael Smith, is cooking up something interesting for Beef and Blues this year.

This is the first time Smith has hosted this particular, Summerside-based, Fall Flavours Festival event.

He’s excited to be coming to the city, he said, and is looking forward to the opportunity to have some fun with a product he believes strongly in.

“I’m particularly proud of our Island Beef.

“We have the best beef in the country. Bar none. Alberta has a bigger marketing budget, but we’ve got the best beef.

“So it’s a great opportunity to work with an industry that I already work with very closely and support big time,” said Smith.

“Also it’s fun to get to Summerside sometimes, not just Charlottetown,” he said.

The concept of the event is based around the idea of expanding the beef horizons of the guests, said Smith.

One way of doing this will be to actually have live cattle on site, one example of each major breed of beef cattle raised on the Island.

The other will be the cuts of beef served during the meal. Anyone expecting a straightup steak dinner from this event will be disappointed, said Smith, at least until they try some of the many other creations being served up.

“This is about showing off all kinds of other cuts on our animals,” he said.

“We’re trying to educate consumers that there is far more to our cattle than those typical, normal steak cuts.”

Beef and Blues starts out with an outdoor reception from 6 to 7 p.m., during which time Smith will be serving beef brisket tacos from his own menu.

After that, guests will move inside and have a selection of items to try.

Nine different local restaurants are contributing something to the menu. Chastity Smith (Michael’s wife) and Jon Rehder will provide the musical component of the evening.

Beef and Blues takes place Sept. 15 at Credit Union Place. Tickets are $69.50.
