Along for the fun

Passengers welcome to join in antique tractor run Saturday

- BY ERIC MCCARTHY

Dock Road farmer Garth Wilkie will be in a familiar place on Saturday, seated at the wheel of a farm tractor, but he won’t be farming.

Instead, he will join dozens of other farmers and antique tractor enthusiasts in the West Prince Tired Iron Antique Club’s annual antique tractor run Sept. 9.

“It’s the camaraderie of the crew,” Wilkie said in explaining what he finds so enjoyable about the tractor runs. Usually 50 or more tractors pull out from the Tired Iron’s Clubhouse, just up the hill on the highway from Coleman Corner, and they parade through West Prince communities.

This year the drivers will steer their antique tractors to West Point and back, a round-trip distance of about 50 kilometres. They leave from the clubhouse

Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and will stop in West Point for lunch before heading back to the clubhouse for fun and more food.

Some of the tractors will be towing wagons or trailers, and interested persons are welcome to hop on for the ride. There is no registration fee and anyone can join.

“It’s just good fun,” said Wilkie, the owner of close to 50 antique tractors, several of them completely restored. There’s usually some jokes told along the way and some good-natured teasing about different tractor models, he said. Many of the club members are people who have used the kinds of tractors that make the annual run, Wilkie noted. During the party back at the clubhouse after the run, draws will be made for cash prizes in the club’s fundraising lottery. Tickets are already being sold and will continue to be sold until time of the draw. Cash prizes are for $500, $300 and $200.

More information on the tractor run, or to ensure there is no weather delay, can be obtained by calling Lloyd at 902-882-3861 or Denis at 902-853-7001.

In case of inclement weather, the run will go Sept. 10.
