-

Caledonian Scottish Orchestra of Nova Scotia will be on the road this weekend performing back-to-back concerts in Summerside and Riverview, N.B., on Sept. 23 and 24.

Their first concert, on Saturday afternoon, takes place in Trinity United Church, 90 Spring St., Summerside. Under the direction of Nelson Ferguson the orchestra will offer a varied selection of lively marches, strathspeys, jigs, reels, slow airs, polkas, and waltzes. Performing at the Summerside concert will be Retake, a four-part barbershop quartet from Prince Edward Island. Formed in 1999, the quartet’s repertoire includes tunes from the 1950s, contemporary tunes, as well as Irish and Scottish songs.

Also performing at both concerts will be vocalist Sarah Lennerton. The Caledonian Orchestra was formed in 1993 and consists of some 35 musicians playing violins, flutes, accordions cellos, bass, keyboard, percussion, and pipes. Orchestra members come from metro Halifax, Hants, Colchester, Cumberland, and Pictou Counties, and New Brunswick. They volunteer their time and talent giving benefit concerts to raise money for various charities. The orchestra has performed at various locations throughout the Maritime provinces as well as Stratford, Ont. They have released four CDs of their music, and their latest, “One Hundred Thousand Welcomes,” will be available at both concerts. Both concerts begin at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets for the concerts are $15 and are available at the door. Children under 14 years of age are admitted free.
