The Summerside Western Capitals returned home on the weekend with two more losses, after a long, disappointing road trip to Nova Scotia’s south shore.

The team’s head coach, Bill McGuigan, said his players are young and improvements can be made after the squad dropped a pair of games to Yarmouth and Bridgewater in Maritime Hockey League action.

“We will have to make some major changes for sure.

“It’s a learning process and there are a lot of holes in our game, which I feel we can improve on. This week we will look at some of the videos and try to improve our structure and go from there.”

The Caps first set back came Friday night in a 6-2 loss to the Mariners.

“We outshot (them) and I believe we could have done better,” McGuigan said. Going into Saturday’s game against the South Shore Lumberjacks, the team was still looking for their first win of the season.

They left Bridgewater in the same predicament after proving no match in dropping and 8-0 decision to the Lumberjacks.

Capitals now sit a 0-3 on the season and will play their home-opener Sept. 30 against the Woodstock Slammers at Eastlink Arena at Credit Union Place.

In Yarmouth Kallum Muirhead and TJ Shea scored for the Western Capitals, while Ben Chipman scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Mariners.

Aaron Maillet (1-1), Brent Broaders (1-1), Matt Smith (11), and Laramie Kostelansky also scored for Yarmouth. Jordan Spence and Josh MacDonald picked up assists for Summerside. Leif Hertz earned the win in net for Yarmouth, allowing two goals on 38 shots while Cody Smith and Rett Rook split goaltending duties for the Caps. Rook played 24:17 allowing four goals on 14 shots, while Smith played 35:43, allowing two goals on 16 shots.

The fate of the Caps goaltenders was no better the next afternoon as each saw time between the pipes in the 8-0 drubbing that saw no offensive markers on the board from by the visitors.
