Summerside bantam A team caps successful season

Summerside bantam A Chevys capped a successful season with a provincial championsh­ip.

It was a championsh­ip season for the Summerside Chevys. The Chevys recently defeated the Bedeque Blue Jackets 15-5 to win the P.E.I. Bantam A Baseball League title.

The Chevys struck early in the deciding contest, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and added five more in the third en route to building a 9-2 lead.

Every Summerside player either scored a run or drove in a run in the balanced attack.

Dylan Gilfoy (2-2, two runs scored three RBI), Cameron Paynter (2-2, three runs scored, two RBI) and Matt MacInnis (2-3, two RBI) led the Chevys’ attack.

Thomas Rayner (2-2, two runs scored) and Mark MacCormack (1-2, run scored) registered Bedeque’s hits.

Winning pitcher Jordan Arsenault tossed a complete game, allowing five runs on three hits while walking five and striking out six. Rave Fergeson and Jaxon Wood pitched for the Blue Jackets.

Semifinals

In the semifinals, the Chevys downed the Charlottet­own Royals 9-3 while the Blue Jackets upset the Sherwood-Parkdale Knights 12-10.

The Chevys trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the third inning, but then struck for five runs in the bottom half of the

inning en route to their semifinal victory.

Winning pitcher was Andrew (Murphy) Cameron, who worked four innings and allowed just two runs on four hits seven walks and struck out seven.

Jordan Arsenault picked up the save, allowing one run on three hits, no walks and

he fanned five.

For the Royals, Isaac Hood was tagged with the loss as he allowed six runs, eight hits, one walk and struck out six in three innings of work.

He was relieved by Jacob McPhee, who pitched three innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out five.

Season

The victory capped an excellent season for the Chevys, who allowed 22 total runs in going a perfect 6-0 (won-lost) in the playoffs.

Seven different players pitched in those games, and each game the Chevys had different players step up and lead the team offensivel­y.

Summerside finished league play in first place during the regular season at 11-1. They went undefeated in winning the Summerside bantam A tournament, and had a great showing in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sherwood, finishing 2-2. However, both losses were to two AA teams from Nova Scotia.
