Mixed results for Holland College on the pitch

It was a mixed bag for the Holland College Hurricanes’ men’s and women’s soccer teams in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n action in Cornwall. The men moved to a first place 8-0 in the standings after a 3-1 win over Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Saturday, and then followed it up with a 2-0 shutout of the King’s College Blue Devils. Meanwhile, the women (33-2, third place) managed a 1-1 tie with Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, before losing 4-0 to King’s College on Sunday. The men’s and women’s teams return to the pitch versus the Crandall Chargers on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall. Game times are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respective­ly.

Men Sunday

Hurricanes 2, Blue Devils 0 Eberechi Okwuwolo’s secondhalf goal in the 51st minute was all the Hurricanes needed to secure the win over King’s College. Tjeerd Schep tacked on an insurance goal two minutes later, and Brandon Lund earned the shutout.

Saturday

Hurricanes 3, Mystics 1 Ibra Sanoh scored 10 minutes into the game, then added the eventual game-winner 48 minutes later. Sanoh netted his third of the game in the 61st minute. Ghairat Meevegul had the Mystics’ goal.

Women Sunday

Blue Devils 4, Hurricanes 0 Scoring in the 14th minute, Madison Frechette put the Blue Devils up early before Thalia Garvock, Meghan Noel and Morgan McIntosh added goals by over the next 40 minutes and salted the game away.

Saturday

Hurricanes 1, Mystics 1 Both teams battled back and forth during the majority of the first half before the Hurricanes’ Darby Myers broke the deadlock with a goal in the 43rd minute. But with the lead for most of the second half the ‘Canes finally relinquish­ed the tying goal.
