Hurricanes start hot

‘Canes men sweep, women split in ACAA season opening weekend in Halifax, N.S.

The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams opened the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n season on the road in Halifax, N.S., last weekend and went a combined 3-of-4. The men picked up a pair of wins beating Mount Saint Vincent University 98-68 and King’s College 115-86, while the women split losing 118-61 to Mount Saint Vincent then downing King’s 71-56. Both Hurricanes squads welcome UNBSJ to Charlottet­own on Saturday for their home openers. Game times are 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men, both at Holland College.

Men Sunday Hurricanes 115, Blue Devils 86

The ‘Canes had a 30-point after three quarters and sailed to the victory.

Jace Colley led the way with a double-double scoring 30 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Roosevelt Whyley had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists while, Jalen King, off the bench, chipped in 18 points and five rebounds.

Saturday Hurricanes 98, Mystics 68

In the third quarter the ‘Canes, came out on fire outscoring the Mystics 31-5 and cruised to a 30-point win. The men fell behind and trailed after one quarter 23-18, but closed the gap to 47-46 heading into halftime.

Marcus Dawkins had a gamehigh 24 points for Holland College, while Michael Kayeye added 17. King and Kyle Lefave had 15 and 12 points off of the bench, respective­ly, while Whyley led the ‘Canes with 11 rebounds.

Women Sunday Hurricanes 71, Blue Devils 56

The ‘Canes overcame a slow start and earned the first win of season.

Jayla Verney led all players with 20 points while Ty’keia Beals and Tyleigha Nelson added 14 and 12 points respective­ly.

Nelson had a double-double as she added 10 rebounds while Lexi MacInnis recorded nine points and 11 rebounds.

Saturday Mystics 118, Hurricanes 61

The ‘Canes fell behind early and could never recover, and eventually were outscored by 39 points in the fourth quarter in the loss.

Verney and Beals both had 16 points to lead the ‘Canes while Nelson added 13 points and seven rebounds. Beals and MacInnis both had six rebounds.
