Doctor moving practice from Crapaud to Cornwall

- BY JIM DAY

A doctor who planned to randomly cut hundreds of patients is now looking to move his practice from Crapaud to Cornwall.

Dr. Joey Giordani has advised Health P.E.I. that he plans to relocate his family practice in the New Year, taking the majority of his patients along with him.

Giordani, a fee-for-service physician, took over Dr. Hendrik Visser’s Crapaud practice in early July.

In late August, the doctor said he reached the “difficult decision’’ to downsize his practice by between 250 to 500 people to be more in line with what he deems the national average. Giordani has not returned calls this week from The Guardian, which would like to learn why Giordani is making the move as well as how many, if any, patients have been cut to date and how many will be dropped when he moves his practice to Cornwall.

In an interview with The Guardian in October, Giordani said he quickly realized the situation at his practice was not tenable due to a loud, unsettling minority of patients who cursed, yelled, threatened and demanded.

Health P.E.I. says Giordani currently has about 2,000 active patients.

“We have met with him on several occasions in recent months, offering support and guidance to help him manage his busy practice,’’ says Dr. Andre Celliers, chief of family and community medicine.

“While we find it unfortunate that he has decided to relocate and reduce his practice, as a fee-for-service physician he is within his right to do so. We will continue to work with him and offer our support as best we can.’’

Health P.E.I. has been informed that Giordani’s office will be providing more information to his patients over the coming weeks.

Celliers encourages individuals who will not be part of Giordani’s new practice in Cornwall to contact the patient registry office toll-free at 1-855563-2101 or complete the application form online at www. healthpei.ca/patientregistry.
