Catholic Faith Heritage Series continues with ‘Lily of the Mohawks’
The Martha Spirituality Centre at SDU Place in Charlottetown will host Graydon Nicholas to present on the life and witness of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
This, the fourth presentation in the Canadian 150 Catholic Faith Heritage Series focusing on Canadian saints, will take place Monday, Dec. 4.
St. Kateri Tekakwitha, informally known as the “Lily of the Mohawks” was an Algonquin-Mohawk laywoman baptized at age 19 and died at age 24.
Born in present day Auriesville, New York, and later a resident of Kahanawake, Que., she became the first North American aboriginal person to be canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict.
Presenter Nicholas was born into a Maliseet family on Tobique First Nations Reserve in New Brunswick. He is an attorney, judge and politician who served as the 30th Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick from 2009 to 2014.
He was the first aboriginal person to hold the office, the first aboriginal person to be appointed a provincial court judge, and the first aboriginal person in Atlantic Canada to obtain a law degree.
He has been trained as a spiritual director and Group Guide of Ignation Spirituality. In 2015 he was named to the Endowed Chair in Native Studies at St. Thomas University.
