Concerns raised over mental health services
An open letter to Rob Henderson, Minister of Health and Wade MacLauchlan Premier of Prince Edward Island: Concerns have been raised regarding the possibility that the provincial government could be entertaining the idea of decreasing, or even eliminating, aspects of the mental health and addiction services at the Prince County Hospital.
As a resident of Prince County for most of my life, I have extensive relationships and a great sense of pride for what we in the western part of P.E.I. bring to the table as a part of this province. We are made up of honest, hard working people that add value to the term “Islander.”
We don’t ask for much from our politicians except to represent us and make decisions that are in the best interest of Islanders. I have been active in the community as a resident, volunteer, business owner and activist. My passion, as those who know me will attest, is mental health and addictions. I have dedicated over half my life 26 years - trying to help those who need assistance with everyday life issues, chronic conditions and life long diseases.
I am only one of many people that have dedicated themselves to the idea that, as healthcare professionals, we can make a difference in the lives of others. We are made up of doctors, nurses, social workers, OT`s, counsellors, healthcare coordinators and personal care workers. We try our best, with the resources given, to give hope to those struggling with mental health and addiction issues. Sometimes this includes putting ourselves in physical danger.
We see the value in the services we offer to individuals and their loved ones facing the challenges that come with mental health issues and the very real daily struggle with addictions. We also see the value in having these services in our community. I feel that there is an opportunity to enhance these services and make them more accessible to those who need them. Concern has been raised that these services at the Prince County Hospital might fall into disarray through budget cuts or the elimination of some services. Surely such an idea would not be entertained by the people we elected to represent the best interest of all Islanders? Can you please publicly clarify your intentions regarding these services?
