Second time, not charming
Summerside man with form of autism has insults yelled at him
A Summerside man who had insults hurled at him earlier this year while he was doing his job, reports that it has happened again.
Dylan Allen, 27, was delivering utility bills to homes in the Elm Street area of the city on Monday afternoon when a car with New Brunswick licence plates pulled up next to him.
The driver, said Allen, yelled at him totally out of nowhere.
“You’re walking slow, my grandmother can walk faster then you, you f***ing fat retarded bastard,” recounted Allen.
Allen has a type of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome and is a client of Community Connections, a non-profit that provides support for people in the Prince County area with special needs.
Allen is part of the organization’s employment outreach program, which has a contract to deliver utility bills for the City of Summerside.
This is the second time this year Allen has experienced an incident like this. Someone in a car full of teenage boys hurled similar insults at him in May while he was delivering on MacEwen Road.
Allen spoke out about the incident in a Journal Pioneer article and later received an apology from the teen who yelled at him.
To have it happen again is really disappointing, he admitted.
“It’s really frustrating to have it happen to me twice in one year. People aren’t getting the message,” he said. “I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“People have just got to stop!”
Allen is not, however, going to let this incident keep him from his work. He likes his job a lot, he said. He’ll keep it up at his own pace.
