Kensington closes gap on first-place Flyers

Coyle, Richards, Fortin, Callaghan make key contributions

The race for first place in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League is a little tighter.

The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild defeated the firstplace Moncton Flyers 5-2 on Friday night to close to within one point of top spot. The Wild has now won six games in a row, and seven of their last eight, to improve to 15-5-1 (won-losttied). The Flyers, who visit the Fredericton Caps (6-15-0) on Saturday, fell to 15-5-2.

At the Superior Propane Centre, Caleb Coyle turned in a strong performance between the pipes for the Wild as he turned aside 25 shots in recording his third straight victory. The final shots-on-goal totals were 27-25 in favour of the Flyers.

Offence

Offensively, Ryan Richards scored two goals, Frank Fortin had a goal and an assist and Austin Callaghan contributed two helpers to pace the Wild. Clark Webster, Chandler Wood, Marc Richard, Colby MacArthur and Dixon MacLeod contributed single helpers.

Cole Darrach and Yannick Bastarache replied for the Flyers.

The Wild held period leads of 2-0 and 4-2.

The Wild’s next game is against the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride on Tuesday. The biggest crowd of the season is expected for the annual Boxing Day contest between the two provincial rivals at Community Gardens in Kensington. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
