Storm is brewing and bringing lots of snow

A winter storm warning is in effect, as the Island is expected to be hit with 15 to 25 centimetre­s of snow beginning near noon today. Environmen­t Canada expects snow heavy at times and blowing snow, with wind coming southeast at 30 kilometres per hour, gusting to 50 km in the morning then 60 to 80 km in the afternoon. Temperatur­e is expected to be around a high of -1. Snow or rain will continue into the night with a low of 0.

In a recent interview, meteorolog­ist Linda Libby said the first major snowstorm isn’t looking good.

“It will be ugly… and pretty much all of the Maritimes will be impacted”, she said.

Parts of the Island may also see between five and 15 millimetre­s of rain.

Winds will calm tonight, but pick up again early Friday morning to 60 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h with a chance of flurries and a low of -13.

Doctors offices are encouragin­g patients to call ahead if they have an appointmen­t, in case of cancellati­ons, while parents have been told to be aware of possible early dismissals from elementary, middle, junior and senior high schools.

CAA Atlantic is urging motorists to air on the side of caution and keep in mind the following tips:

– Let others know where you are going before travelling

– Carry a fully charged cellphone and charger

– Do not leave your vehicle on the side of the road if there is an issue

– Have at least half a tank of gas

– Take time to clear snow from entire vehicle before travelling

The Confederat­ion Bridge issued a warning telling Islanders the high winds make traffic restrictio­ns necessary. Restrictio­ns are expected to begin around 1 p.m. today and could remain in place until 11 a.m. Friday.
