Bernadette Kernaghan’s portraits exhibit opening at Eptek Centre Sunday

-

Bernadette Kernaghan’s portraits exhibit will officially open at the Eptek Centre in Summerside on Sunday afternoon.

You might feel like someone is watching you at Eptek Art & Culture Centre for the next few weeks, as a myriad of friendly faces are on display.

The exhibit “Portraits in Oil: New Friends and Neighbours” by artist Bernadette Kernaghan opens this Sunday. The paintings reflect the panorama of diverse individuals Kernaghan has come into contact with since her move to P.E.I. in 2014. Several of the portraits have an influence from the past, while others reference an inner aspect of the individual.

“Painting portraits has been a happy compulsion for me, ever since I was a child,” says Kernaghan. “Somehow it is one way I get to know someone. “Spending the many hours with an individual for the time it takes to create a painting, studying facial expressions, etc. It’s a little like reading a fortune. Who the person is within the flesh and bones is always a primary focus.

“Creating such a large body of work within a community has taught me much about this place and its residents,” adds the artist. “P.E.I. is a wonderful place, full of an amazing and cherished mix of souls.”

The portraits will be on display from Jan. 14 to Feb. 23, inclusive.

All are welcome to attend the official exhibit opening Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at Eptek Art & Culture Centre in Summerside. There is no charge to attend and refreshments will be served. Eptek Art & Culture Centre is a site of the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation and is located at 130 Heather Moyse Dr. The centre is open Tuesdays to Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 12 to 4.
