Former Kensington Legion property rezoning and sale moving ahead

- BY COLIN MACLEAN

The redevelopment of the former Royal Canadian Legion Branch 9 in Kensington took a significant step forward Monday evening.

The Town of Kensington has given its tentative blessing to a rezoning request for the former Legion property at 88 Victoria Street West.

The property has been vacant since early in 2017 when the membership moved into a new expansion of the Kensington Lions Club.

A buyer, Kujtim Musliu, has come forward with an offer to buy the building and turn it into a used vehicle dealership, but needs a rezoning to allow the business. A public meeting was held recently to give residents a chance to voice any concerns they might have. At least one neighbour expressed worry about light and noise pollution at their adjacent property. Musliu has committed to building a fence between his business and the neighbours and to set up the lot’s lighting in a manor that will deflect away from nearby homes.

Kensington council is holding a special council meeting at town hall on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. to vote on and most likely pass the final reading of the zoning change. To date none of the councillors have voiced any opposition to the project.
