Save the Whales fundraisin­g event Jan. 21

Save Our Seas and Shores P.E.I. is hosting a Save the Whales fundraisin­g event on Sunday, Jan. 21, at the University of P.E.I.

All proceeds will help support Ecojustice and the Sierra Club Canada Foundation in a court action to protect the Gulf of St. Lawrence from unlawful oil exploratio­n.

Guest speakers will be marine biologist Tonya Wimmer, director and founder of the Marine Animal Response Society, and Gretchen Fitzgerald, national program director, Sierra Club Canada Foundation. Wimmer has 20 years of experience studying and protecting marine animals, particular­ly by working to ensure human activities are sustainabl­e and conducted responsibl­y.

Fitzgerald will speak about the court case taking the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador offshore petroleum board to court for contraveni­ng the Accords Act.

The event will also include food and musical entertainm­ent. It will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in Room 242 of MacDougall Hall on the UPEI campus. Storm date is Jan. 28.
