Prince County could get brunt of freezing rain on Saturday

Forecasters say expected storm hard to predict

Environment Canada continues to warn of the potential for a significant amount of freezing rain for Prince County, Saturday.

Two weather systems are on track to hit P.E.I. Friday and Saturday.

Today’s system had originally predicted significant rainfall, but that has since changed to showers. Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 11C. However, steady rain will start tonight and continue into Saturday.

A special weather statement has been issued for the whole province for tonight and Saturday.

That system is expected to start in Prince County and move east. It was unclear as of Thursday afternoon how much of the Island would be encompassed by the freezing rain aspect of the storm, with the rest facing significant rainfall amounts.

Ian Hubbard, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said Islanders should prepare for some tricky weather Saturday.

“Rain or freezing rain is kind of the forecast we’re going for, for Saturday, at this point. It does have the potential to be a significant event with several hours of freezing rain expected … for some areas, specifically the western parts of the province,”

Hubbard added that the two weather systems have been hard to nail down in terms of accurate predictions. He encouraged residents to stay tuned to the Environment Canada Weather service and other news sources for more accurate forecasts.
