Star vet returns
Dr. Michelle Oakley, star of National Geographic Wild’s reality show “Dr. Oakley: Yukon Vet,” returns to P.E.I. to give a lecture.
Dr. Michelle Oakley, star of National Geographic Wild’s reality show “Dr. Oakley: Yukon Vet,” will return to P.E.I. where she attended college, to present a lecture at the veterinary symposium this weekend.
The annual Students of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA) Symposium, is hosted this year by Dr. Oakley’s alma mater, the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Dr. Oakley will address Canadian veterinary students with her keynote lecture, “Life of a Yukon Vet: Will Film for Food,” on Saturday.
The only all-species veterinarian for Canada’s vast Yukon territory, Dr. Oakley worked for nine years as the wildlife veterinarian and the first regional biologist for Yukon’s Fish and Wildlife Department. Now, she runs an animal clinic out of her home in Haines Junction, Yukon, and runs weekly clinics 148 miles away in Haines, Alaska, and 96 miles away in Whitehorse, Yukon. In Whitehorse, Dr. Oakley is also an on-call vet for the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and has run specialized research programs for First Nation organizations and the Canadian government.
The exclusive, annual SCVMA Symposium is organized by veterinary students for students enrolled in one of Canada’s five veterinary colleges. The symposium offers an opportunity for students to view Canada’s diverse veterinary profession while learning and networking with future Canadian colleagues.
Dr. Oakley’s presentation is open only to SCVMA symposium registrants and not to the general public.
