Bearcats end Caps’ winning streak

Truro scores power-play goal in final minute of third period

The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ five-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night. Campbell Pickard’s scored a power-play goal with 31 seconds remaining in regulation time to break a 4-4 tie, and lift the host Truro Bearcats to a 5-4 win over the Capitals at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

The Capitals, who fell to 21-13-1-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), led the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) game 2-1 after the first period, and the teams were tied 3-3 following 40 minutes.

Short-lived lead

Kallum Muirhead’s second power-play goal of the game at the 12-minute mark of the third period gave the Caps a short-lived 4-3 lead, but Cameron MacLeod’s unassisted marker 56 seconds later pulled the Bearcats even. Pickard finished with two goals and an assist while Dylan Burton (1-1) and Tayler Read of Wilmot Valley also scored for the Bearcats (16-16-0-1). Riley Baggs (2), Mark O’Shaughness­y, Noah Archibald, Karter Renouf and Tyler Pyke added helpers.

TJ Shea also scored twice for the Capitals to extend his point streak to 29 games. Sebastien Cormier (2), Jesse Annear, Brodie MacMillan, Chris Chaddock and Brodie MacArthur, who extended his point streak to 21 games, collected assists.

Overall, the Bearcats outshot the Capitals 42-22, including period advantages of 16-8, 11-9 and 15-5. Kevin Resop earned the goaltendin­g win over Alex Bishop.

The game’s three stars were: 1. Campbell Pickard (Bearcats), 2. Cameron MacLeod (Bearcats), 3. TJ Shea (Capitals).

The Capitals’ next game is on Thursday, when they entertain the league-leading Edmundston Blizzard (26-6-3-0). Game time at Eastlink Arena is set for 7 p.m.
