Ronahan, McCallum win singles
Prince County senior tournament held at Three Oaks
Jack Ronahan emerged as the winner of the men’s singles event at the Prince County senior badminton tournament at Three Oaks Senior High School recently.
Ronahan defeated his doubles’ partner, David Pan, in a semifinal battle that went to three games – 17-21, 21-8, 21-16.
In the other semifinal, Luke MacKinnon defeated Sam Yuan 21-15, 21-13 to advance.
In the final, Ronahan won the opening game easily 21-9, but MacKinnon bounced back to take the second 21-16. The third game had the players exchange leads a few times, but Ronahan claimed the title with his 21-16 win.
Henry Zhang won the consolation round with a tough final win over Neil Moore 21-17, 2224, 21-13.
In men’s doubles, Ronahan/ Pan narrowly got by Moore/ James Richardson in one semifinal after losing the opening game 18-21, 21-14, 21-18. Justin Barkhouse/Mark Brown defeated MacKinnon and partner Paul Marchbank in the other semifinal 21-13, 21-17 to advance.
The No. 1 seed of Barkhouse/ Brown continued their winning ways with a finals victory over Ronahan/Pan. Scores were 2112, 21-14. Owen Hall/Alex McCloskey won the consolation final over Michael Bernard/ Henry Zhang 21-16, 21-18.
Women’s singles Karla McCallum claimed another women’s singles title, winning all of her matches in the round robin of four players. Ruiwen Zhu won her matches against Jacqueline Hughes and Gracyn Handrahan to claim second place.
Hughes defeated Handrahan to come third.
In women’s doubles’ play, McCallum/Zhu teamed up to go 3-0 in round-robin play, including a hard-fought contest with Keirstyn Hamlin/Pauline Hamlin – 18-21, 21-18, 21-12. Emma Hughes/Jacqueline Hughes went 2-1, including a drawn-out win over the Hamlins 10-21, 21-19, 21-14.
The Hamlins came third with a 21-12, 21-11 win over Mary Cote/Carrie Drake.
In the field of eight teams for mixed play, Mark Brown/Emma Hughes claimed the title with a tough 14-21, 21019, 21-12 semifinal win over Yuan/McCallum, and an entertaining finals win over Ronahan/Zhu – 21-18, 21-19. Ronahan/Zhu had a hard semifinal battle with Barkhouse/Drake 19-21, 21-7, 22-20. MacKinnon/Jacqueline Hughes prevailed in the consolation final over Marchbank/Pauline Hamlin 21-12, 21-12.
