Collision Thursday in Orwell kills 34-year-old man; victims of two other crashes identified

A 34-year-old Island man died at the scene of a collision in the Orwell area Thursday morning, marking the third death on P.E.I. roads in as many days.

Witnesses said Thursday morning’s collision involved a one-tonne pickup truck fitted with a salt/sand spreader. Less than one kilometre from the accident scene is a government sand and shale pit.

The other vehicle was a small red car. The vehicles collided head-on on Route 210, the Kinross Road, said the RCMP.

The 34-year-old P.E.I. man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottet­own with undetermin­ed injuries, said the police report.

Road conditions were icy, said one witness, who did not want his name used.

The RCMP issued a notice around 8:30 a.m. saying that all of the Kinross Road had been closed, from Route 1 to Route 24, which is known as the Murray Harbour Road.

It is the third fatal accident on Island roads this week.

On Tuesday, John Frederick MacDonald, 71, died as a result of a single-vehicle crash near East Point. The crash occurred in the afternoon along Route 16.

According to his death notice, MacDonald was a resident of North Lake. He is survived by his wife, Anne MacDonald (nee MacPhee), daughter Johanna Field and two grandchild­ren, Lauren and Vivian. He is also survived by siblings Gerald, Bernadette McInnis (Leo), Loretta Walsh (Leroy), Charlie (Helen), Victor (Debbie), Patricia MacDonald, Bernard and numerous nieces and nephews. MacDonald was predecease­d by brother Leonard.

He will be resting at Dingwell Funeral Home with visiting hours today, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Knights of Columbus service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Funeral mass will be held at St. Columba Roman Catholic Church on Saturday at 1 p.m., with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

On Wednesday, a singlevehi­cle crash in Prince County claimed the life of 53-year-old Barbara “Barb” Grace McCormick.

The crash occurred early Wednesday morning when McCormick’s westbound vehicle left Route 2 in Inverness, went into a ditch a struck a utility pole.

McCormick, the driver and lone occupant, was taken to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

According to her death notice, McCormick was born in O’Leary to Lloyd Colicutt and the late Juanita (nee Bulger). She is survived by her husband, Fred McCormick, son Richard Anger (Sue) and step-children Elizabeth Ann and Cory McCormick.

She also leaves behind grandchild­ren Malerie, Freddie and Rebecca, along with her brother and sisters Brian (Suzanne) Collicutt, June (David) Durksen, Blaine Collicutt, Victoria Collicutt and several nieces and nephews.

McCormick is resting at the East Prince Funeral Home in Summerside. Funeral arrangemen­ts have yet to be announced.
