Midget Caps split final two games

Summerside begins playoff series in Souris on Tuesday

The Summerside Capitals closed out the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League regular season with a win and loss over the weekend.

The Capitals, who finished in sixth place at 6-24-0 (won-lost-tied), edged the Western Regals 3-2 on Friday night, and dropped a 7-1 decision to the Kings County Kings on Saturday.

The Capitals will face the Kings in the best-of-five quarter-final series. Game 1 is scheduled for the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris on Tuesday at 7:20 p.m., with Game 2 back at Credit Union Place’s Ice Pad on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m.

Caps 3 Regals 2

At Credit Union Place, Dexter Stewart’s power-play goal at 18:25 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie to lift the Caps to victory. It was Stewart’s second goal of the game, and Brandon Hastings netted Summerside’s other tally. Blake Vanderveld­en and Kalib Snow added helpers. Tristan Cahill and Chandler Des-Roches replied for the fourth-place Regals (10-15-5). Single helpers were credited to Aydan Kinch, Jax Harper, Jesse Hackett and James Doyle. Summerside held period advantages of 1-0 and 2-1.

Carter Champion picked up the goaltendin­g win.

Kings 7 Capitals 1

At The Plex in Slemon Park, Jake MacLaren (2-1), Lucas MacAulay (2), Riley Jamieson (1-1), Jacob Outhouse (1-1) and Trey Vancolen contribute­d goals for the Kings (15-10-5), who completed the regular season in third place in the six-team league. Matthan Runighan, Ben MacIsaac, Brodie MacCarthy, Jacob MacEachern, Tyson McInnis and Jack King chipped in with helpers.

The Kings took a 2-1 lead into the first intermissi­on, but scored four unanswered goals in the middle frame to take a 6-1 cushion into the third period. Winning goaltender was Ben Bruce.
