TOSH teachers face-off against Summerside police in upcoming 2018 annual charity hockey game
The Three Oaks Senior High teachers’ hockey team will hit the ice to face-off against the Summerside police in the 2018 annual charity game Friday, March 2.
Puck-drop is 8 p.m. at Eastlink Arena at Credit Union Place.
There will be door prizes given away and all proceeds will go to the TOSH breakfast program.
The teachers are the defending champs and in the eighth edition of this continuing battle, they may have a slight edge to repeat.
Rick Vaive, Toronto Maple Leafs alumni, will be lacing up the skates to play with the teacher’s team.
Jeff Clow, TOSH principal, said a community member won a contest and part of the prize was having an NHL alumni appear at an event.
“It worked out well for us.” Dan Goguen was the lucky winner. He’s a Mitsubishi dealer on the Island at Tradewinds Heating and Cooling.
His distributor out of Montreal was hoping he would use it for a commercial event, Goguen said.
“For me, having married an Islander and knowing a little bit about the culture, I thought being involved in a community event would be more important than an economic event. “In the long term it will serve me better and that’s what’s the best for the situation on the Island.”
It was not possible to organize an event like this on his own, Goguen said.
“Having the opportunity to get this celebrity to help a charity was the obvious thing to do for me.”
As far as the game itself goes, both teams say they play hard, but when they get out on the ice, it’s all about the fun.
There’s a lot of joking back and forth between the two teams.
Cpl. Jason Blacquiere of the Summerside Police Services said the teachers have managed to wrangle a sniper again.
“Principal Clow is trying to stack his team. It’s supposed to be a police versus teachers game, but he likes to draft people who aren’t teachers.” Clow said they might bring in a couple of ringers here and there, but it’s all part of the fun of it. He’s not prepared to let Vaive split the game and play for both sides.
“We’re going to be trying to hold on to him the whole time.”
Both sides agree it’s going to be a fun night and hopefully raise some money for the program.
It’s important for the school to partner with the police. They do a lot for the school and community, Clow said.
“It’s a good thing for both of us.”
