Maroons moving on

The O’Leary Maroons, last year’s regular season and playoff champions, are heading back to the West Prince Senior Hockey League’s championsh­ip series.

The Maroons, who finished the abbreviate­d WPSHL regular season in fourth place, downed the 2018 regular season champion Wellington Flyers 6-4 Tuesday night to take the best-of-five semifinal series 3-1. The game was played in front of more than 700 fans at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre.

The score was tied 2-2 after one period and the Maroons went into the third period clinging to a 3-2 lead.

Mike MacIsaac led the way for the Maroons scoring a hat trick, including a power-play goal and a short-handed, empty-net goal. He also chipped in with one assist. Nick Reilly (1-2), Mike Adams and Jeff MacIsaac also scored. Picking up assists for the Maroons were Connor Dyment, 2; Tyson Carragher, Matt Stewart, Darryl Donahue and Jordan MacIsaac.

Todd MacDougall led the way for the Flyers with two goals and an assist. Justin Arsenault (1-1) and Colin Arsenault also scored. Matt Kelly (3), Mitch Lamers, Jeremy Arsenault and Pat MacLennan added assists. Chase Dyment picked up the goaltendin­g win. Neil Arsenault was in goal for the Flyers. The game saw five minors and a 10-minute misconduct called against the Flyers and four minors assessed to the Maroons.

The Maroons, who roared back to win three games in a row after the Flyers won Game 1 of the series, now await the outcome of the Tignish Aces/ Alberton Regals semifinal. That series was tied at a game apiece heading into Wednesday night’s Game 3 at the Jacques Cartier Arena.
