ARSENAULT, HOWARD JOSEPH

-

Age 88 of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Prince Edward Island he was a son of the late Joseph and Beatrice

(nee Gallant) Arsenault. Howard began his nearly 75year career at age 14, fishing with his father out of Skinners Pond. In his early 20’s he went to Montreal and was employed by BF Goodrich. This marked the beginning of his life-long career in the tire business. He lived in Montreal for a few years where he met and married his wife, Alberta. Soon after, they moved to Dartmouth to begin their family. Howard continued his career employed with BF Goodrich/Town Tire Services at the original Commercial Street location. He later worked for Sumner Tire, and then at age 59 formed H and A Tire Consulting with Alberta, who maintained the books as he grew sales. He grudgingly agreed to take an early retirement at age 87, although he was always quite adamant that he wanted to keep working. Howard was very sociable and loved spending time with his many friends, family, and his customers. He had a passion for music, especially Island fiddling, and would often play guitar accompaniment on his treasured ‘63 Gibson J45. He also loved old time Country & Western songs, and had a repertoire of selections he would perform solo or with his friends at kitchen parties and other gatherings. He cherished his visits with friends and relatives back home in Skinners Pond. In his later years, Howard earned a reputation as a ruthless cribbage player. He always brought a smile to his opponents with his great sense of humor, even as he pocketed their quarters. He is survived by daughters Carole (Tim); Diane; son, Peter (Marilyn); daughter-inlaw Michele; granddaughters Shari and Lauren Arsenault; step-grandchildren Natalie and Stephen Robia and their families; brother, LeRoy (Evelyn), Skinners Pond; sister-inlaw, Claire; brother-in-law, Joe Arsenault, Maine, USA; and many nephews and nieces. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Alberta (LeVasseur); son, Marc; siblings, Ernest, Melvina, Irene, Jerry, Emily, and Sylvia. In memoriam donations may be made to a charity of choice. Cremation has taken place. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 in St. Clements Catholic Church, 16 Gaston Rd., Dartmouth with a reception to follow in the church hall. Officiated by Father Gerald David. A private family interment will be held in St. John’s Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.coleharbourfuneral.com.
