Woman dies in crash
Road conditions were a factor in Springfield crash: Kensington Fire Department deputy fire chief
A woman has died following a collision with a tractor trailer on Route 2 in Springfield late Thursday afternoon.
It was one of several collisions across P.E.I., including another serious one in Dunstaffnage earlier in the afternoon.
East Prince District RCMP, Kensington Police Department, Island EMS and the Kensington Fire Department responded to the call in Springfield around 4:20 p.m.
The crash occurred near the Breadalbane turnoff on a straight stretch of road when a Honda Civic and a milk truck carrying a full load collided. There were no passengers in the Honda Civic.
The man driving the tractor trailer sustained no injuries. The fatality was confirmed by the East Prince District RCMP and the Kensington Fire Department.
Rodney Hickey, deputy fire chief with the Kensington Fire Department, said road conditions were a factor. “They were very slippery,” said Hickey. “They were snowcovered and it was windy, very windy.”
Route 2 was closed between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for investigation.
RCMP P.E.I. Traffic tweeted around 5:40 p.m. that RCMP had responded to eight collisions on Island highways since 3 p.m.
A two-vehicle collision occurred in Dunstaffnage sending a woman driver to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) with serious injuries. Queens District RCMP, Island EMS and the North Shore Fire Department responded to the accident shortly after 3 p.m. on St. Peters Road.
Jason Blackman, fire chief for the North Shore Fire Department, says a Dodge truck and Honda Civic collided just past the Suffolk Road.
The woman driving the Honda Civic was transported to the QEH with serious injuries by ambulance, and the woman passenger of the Dodge truck was transported by a second ambulance to QEH with unknown injuries. The man driving the Dodge truck was treated and released at the scene. Blackman said Route 2 was shut down for 90 minutes for investigation.
“Typically, in those situations, now we try and shut the traffic down just for the safety of all, especially when the roads are like that,” said Blackman.
This is the second fatal crash on P.E.I. highways this week. A 35-year-old woman died after being involved in a head-on collision Monday on the TransCanada Highway in Eldon.
