Grants available to assist Islanders with their home renovations

- JOURNAL PIONEER STAFF

Spring season is home improvement season and grants of up to $6,000 are now available for major P.E.I. home renovations such as electrical, structural, heating, plumbing and fire safety. Individuals with a permanent disability may receive up to $8,000 through the Prince Edward Island Home Renovation Program, for improvements to accommodate their needs.

“The grant I received through this program for renovations literally saved my home,” said Gary Waterman. “The subfloor and beams in my house were rotting and I didn’t have the financial means for repairs. Thanks to this program, I was able to get the work done and

continue to live in my home in safety and comfort.” Islanders must have an annual household income of up to $35,000 and an assessed property value of $145,000 or less to qualify.

Applications are prioritized based on income, and those with the lowest income will receive funding first. “Government recognizes how important these grants are in helping Islanders remain in their own home and maintain their independence,” said Tina Mundy, minister of Family and Human Services.

“We have assisted more than 1,000 Islanders and invested $6.2 million since this program started in 2013, and this year another 250 individuals and families will get help.”
