Building to code

Training available for newly adopted National Building Code

-

Training on the newly adopted National Building Code is now available for all those involved in the P.E.I. construction industry.

The National Building Code is the model followed nationwide for the construction and design of buildings. “Adopting the new building code will improve the energy efficiency of our buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while it also will reduce red tape for the industry,” said Richard Brown, Communities, Land and Environment minister.

“We are pleased to invest in upgrading skills for people who will be applying the new building code,” he added.

The Building Code Act was passed in the P.E.I. legislature in 2017. The industry will have time to adjust to the new requirements for residential construction over two years, before the code is enforced.

Once the public consultations are complete and the new regulations approved, the National Building Code will become law. “The new National Building Code will ensure that builders, homeowners, and developers follow the same standards,” said Sam Sanderson, the executive of the Construction Industry Association of P.E.I. Sanderson urges those in the industry to take advantage of the course to “familiarize themselves with the new code.” Adoption of the 2015 National Building Code helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions in newly built areas. And homeowners can save money on energy each month by implementing the requirements of the National Building Code.

The Construction Association of P.E.I. has collaborated with the government of P.E.I. and Holland College to offer the voluntary certification program. For more information contact the Construction Association at 902-368-3303 or email admin@capei.ca to register.
