Afternoon of laughs, games and performanc­es set for March 17

With World Theatre Day coming in the next few days, P.E.I. will mark the occasion at the Carrefour in Charlottet­own with its annual Community Theatre Festival.

This year, marks the 57th celebratio­n of the internatio­nal day.

Seven short plays (30 minutes or less) will run every 45 minutes through the afternoon on March 17, in a smorgasbor­d of comedy, charming drama, legend telling and improv.

With the Island’s rich theatre community, the Community Theatre Festival is a chance for participan­ts to strut their stuff and get feedback from adjudicato­rs Laura K. Bird and Monique Lafontaine.

This year’s festival has an array of participan­ts include the Tracadie Players’ skit “News at 6,” and the Mi’kmaq Heritage actors will present several new tellings of imaginativ­e First-Nation legends handed down through the generation­s. There is also Nadine Salami’s dramedy, “Ma meilleure amie, ma meilleure ennemie.” In the suspensefu­l comedy, “Any Body for Tea,” with the Murray Players six ‘very proper’ spinsters employ an unorthodox lure to attract the attention of a handsome homicide detective. Students from Spotlight School of Arts will provide a game of theatre improve, and ACT (a community theatre) with offer a sneak-preview of Hank Stinson’s musical “Rainbow Valley.”

There will also be a staged reading from a new original script, “Missing Mom,” by P.E.I. playwright Malcolm Murray, featuring some of the Island’s best playwright-actors.

The Carrefour’s doors open at 12:30 on Saturday. Plays begin at 1 p.m. and run until

about 5:30 p.m.

There’ll be a 15-minute break between plays to provide for adjudicati­on and set-up of the next play, and also to give the

audience a chance to socialize, buy raffle tickets and sample the refreshmen­ts.
