EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigations undertaken by Prince District RCMP between March 5 and 11.
Travel trailer stolen in Lower Freetown
On March 5 at about 8:45 a.m., East Prince RCMP received a report of a stolen 19-foot travel trailer in Lower Freetown. The 1993 aluminumsided Prowler with a blue stripe had been parked at a vacant building.
Missing man located in Alberton
On March 5 at about 7 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a call about a 90-year-old man who went missing. He failed to return home after an appointment and was later located in Alberton by a member of the public. The man was in good health. He went for a drive after his appointment and didn’t realize the time of day.
Mailbox stolen in North St. Eleanors
On March 7 at about 10 a.m., East Prince RCMP received a complaint about a stolen mailbox in North St. Eleanors. It was stolen sometime during the night. There were no other complaints from neighbouring houses.
Vehicles checked, one verbal warning
On March 7 and 8, West Prince RCMP conducted check-stops in Tignish, Alberton and O’Leary. A total of 24 vehicles were checked with one verbal warning issued.
Fatal motor vehicle collision
On March 8 at about 4:15 p.m., East Prince RCMP attended
a motor vehicle collision on Route 2 in Pleasant Valley. A 23-year-old woman from Souris was pronounced dead at the scene. The two vehicles involved were a car and a commercial transport truck and trailer. Weather and road conditions are considered to be contributing factors. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Vehicle hits downed pole, receives damage
On March 8 at around 11 p.m., East Prince RCMP received a complaint about a vehicle that was damaged after hitting a downed pole across the road in Travellers Rest. The Department of Highways responded to assist. No injuries were reported.
Single-vehicle accident in North Bedeque
On March 9 at about 1 a.m., East Prince RCMP responded to a single vehicle traffic accident on Route 1A in North Bedeque. The driver lost control of the vehicle due to slushy road conditions and ended up on its roof. The driver was not injured.
Tractor stereo stolen in Bloomfield
On March 9, West Prince RCMP received a complaint of a theft from a farming property in Bloomfield. A stereo, worth about $150 was stolen from a tractor parked on a farm. The complainant said he would be installing security cameras in an effort to deter any similar occurrences.
Break and enter, theft in Central Bedeque
On March 10, East Prince RCMP received a complaint of
break and enter and theft to a business in Central Bedeque. The theft is believed to have happened sometime between 6 p.m. on March 9, and the following morning. The investigation is continuing.
Damage to property in St. Nicholas
On March 10 at about 11 a.m., East Prince RCMP responded to a complaint of damage to property in St. Nicholas. The homeowner called to report a snowmobile had driven through the yard and damaged grapevines. Police went to the area and confirmed there was damage, but no snowmobiles were seen in the area.
Checking on residents
During the past week, Prince District RCMP responded to six separate requests to confirm the well-being of individuals. These requests can either fall under the Mental Health Act, Missing Persons or WellBeing Checks.
Twenty-eight traffic complaints
During the past week, Prince District RCMP received 28 traffic-related complaints. They were mostly about vehicles alleged to be driving erratically or speeding as well as reports of traffic hazards on the highway. RCMP will be continuing to conduct checkpoints and patrols throughout March, in various communities across Prince District. They will target cellphone use, seat belts, distracted driving and impaired driving.
