Holland College earn University Cup in first season

-

The Holland College Hurricanes ringette team completed its inaugural season with a University Cup title after defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 3-2 in Sunday’s championship game in Halifax, N.S. Sue-Ellen McInnis led the way with a hat trick while Ayrna Rogers and Alysha Corrigan each chipped in an assist. Kate Moss earned the goaltending win. Hurricanes head coach Stephen Gallaway praised his team’s performance.

“Our girls played a great weekend of ringette. It certainly was a dramatic win. “Dalhousie has matched our speed in every game we played this season and scores have been very close. We expected it would be the same in the final,” said Gallaway. “We knew it was not going to be easy, but the girls were in the right mindset from the start of the game. We came out strong and finished with a great defensive effort and received stellar goaltending.”

The Hurricanes finished with a round robin record of 1-2 after losses to Acadia and Dalhousie and a win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies, and went into the playoffs as the third seed.

In the semifinal, Holland College downed Acadia 7-2 thanks to goals by Olivia Gill (2), Corrigan (1-1), McInnis (1-1) Paige Blakely (1-1) and Brianne Curley and Moss’ goal work. The ‘Canes finished the season with a 15-6-2 record and included winning the Harbour City Lakers Colt tournament in January.
