Metros improve to 2-1
Lynx sits at 1-2 after two days of play in Maritime Hockey North junior C championship tournament
It was a busy day for the two P.E.I. teams at the 2018 Maritime Hockey North junior C hockey championship on Thursday.
Both the P.E.I.-champion Sherwood-Parkdale Metros and host Southside Lynx split their two games at the South Shore Actiplex. The results leave the Metros with a 2-1 (wonlost) record, and the Lynx sit at 1-2 after Day 2 of the fiveteam event, which also includes representatives from Nova Scotia (Spryfield Attack), New Brunswick (Tri-County Rivercats) and Hockey North (Baffin Blizzard).
The teams are playing a round robin, with the top four advancing to Saturday’s two semifinal games.
The Metros downed the Lynx 5-1 in the final game of the day, and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Attack in a late-morning start. The Lynx moved into the win column with a 4-3 decision over the Blizzard in the afternoon, and the other game Thursday had the Rivercats getting by the Attack 3-2 in overtime.
The statistics of the late game between the Metros and Lynx were unavailable at deadline time.
Lynx 4 Blizzard 3
Nathan Paynter’s goal at the 17-minute mark of the third period broke a 3-3 tie, and lifted the Lynx to victory. Tyson Beckingham (1-2), Ryan Beckingham and Rhys Caseley also scored for the Lynx. Single helpers were credited to Blake VanderVelden, Cameron Nelson, Tyler Jurkowski and David Sato.
Jose Cote (1-1), Mitchell Tilley and Stephane Nukaplak replied for the Blizzard.
The Lynx led 2-1 after the first and second periods. Winning goaltender Sean MacPhee turned in a 41-save effort as the Blizzard held a 44-41 shots-on-goal advantage.
Attack 4 Metros 1
Dan MacKnight scored two goals and added a pair of helpers to pace the Attack. Francois Poirier (2-1) rounded out Spryfield’s scoring.
Jake Arsenault, assisted by Logan Toole and Owen Arsenault, netted the lone Metros’ tally.
The Attack held period leads of 1-0 and 2-0. Winning goaltender Ryan Higginson stopped 33 of 34 shots. Blake Arsenault made 36 saves on 40 tests in the Sherwood-Parkdale cage.
Rivercats 3 Attack 2 (OT)
Will Hall’s goal at the oneminute mark of overtime was the difference. Hunter Atwin
and Taylor LeBlanc also scored for Tri-County while Scott Comeau and David Comeau answered for Spryfield.
The Rivercats led 1-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 1-1 following 40 minutes.
Ryan Broad turned aside 38 shots to earn the goaltending win as the Attack outshot the Rivercats 40-31.
