Aiken wins it in OT

Host Central Storm wins opening game at Atlantics

Meg Aiken scored 3:02 into overtime Thursday as the host Central Storm defeated the Western Phantoms from New Brunswick 2-1 to open the Atlantic bantam AAA girls’ hockey tournament.

Harlee Bradley scored 8:41 into the second period off a rebound from a Sydnee Chaisson shot to give the home side a 1-0 lead at MacLauchla­n Arena. Kaitlyn Thornton tied it 2:14 into the third with an unassisted goal.

Frankie Hancock made 19 saves for the win while Alexi Caron stopped 27 shots in the loss. The Storm improved to 1-0-0 while the Phantoms are 1-0-1 after opening the day with a 3-2 win over the Mid Isle Wildcats, the Prince Edward Island champs.

Cassidy Waugh opened the scoring 1:24 into the game for the Phantoms. Emily Brinston made it 2-0 1:31 into the second before Rachel Richards shorthande­d and Lydia Hamill tied it with 1:26 left in regulation.

Kierra St. Peter scored in the final second to win it.

Carina Ouellette, Ella Lawrence and Livvy Dewar had assists for the Phantoms. Ailidh Barry made 28 saves for the win while Emma Arsenault stopped 22 shots in the loss. Nova Scotia’s Metro West Force defeated the Tri Pen Ice from Newfoundla­nd and Labrador 3-0 behind a two-goal effort from Emma Bradbury. Kiara MacDonald also scored while Charlotte Baines, Katherine Zinck and Grace Somers had helpers.

Lucy Phillips made seven saves for the shutout while Hayley Bishop was peppered by 52 shots in the Ice’s crease.
