Annual used clothing sale ensures all clothing goes somewhere; helps hospital

Mary Curran has been a member of the Prince County Hospital Auxiliary for 17 years. She’s been helping with the group’s used clothing sale since its inception 15 years ago. Every year the Auxiliary picks out a piece of equipment the hospital needs and raise money towards it, explained Curran. This year’s target has yet to be determined.

“We usually donate between $30,000 to $40,000 every year.”

The clothing sale takes place at the Presbyterian Church located on Victoria Road in Summerside on Friday, April. 13 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday April. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Everyone has too much clothes in their home, said Curran.

“It’s a good way to clean out your closet, plus your helping the community.”

The clothes are sorted by quality.

“There are a good variety of mens, womens and youth clothes.”

The turn out of last year’s sale was unbelievable, she said. “People are now asking when we are having it, they’re now becoming more aware.”

The profit of last year’s sale was roughly $3,000.

After each sale the Auxiliary gives a percentage of the profits made to the church for allowing them to use the space and for helping out.

“They help us out with the setting up and tearing it down.”

And the leftover clothes are given to the Alberton Bargain Nook after Saturday’s sale is over, said Curran.

“The proceeds made at their store go towards the hospital up there.

“Nothing goes to waste.”
