‘Redefining Realistic’

Heather Moyse invites readers to take the wheel and steer their life towards success

- BY DESIREE ANSTEY

Three-sport national athlete and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Heather Moyse invites the reader to release the brakes of constraints, shift the gears of perspective and steer their life to see the possibilities through her new book, “Redefining Realistic: Shift your perspective. Seize your potential. Own your story.” Moyse might not have been realistic when she decided at 27 she would represent Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics in a sport she had never done before, bobsleigh.

But she decided to shift her perspective and focus on the possibilities. She redefined realistic.

In this motivating read, Moyse shares how she overcame multiple career-threatening injuries and self-doubt as an athlete, while helping the reader to move past their fears, self-limiting beliefs, assumptions and negative experiences to achieve those dreams whether in sports, business or life.

“We are all capable of way more than we give ourselves credit for, in sports, in business, in relationships, and in life. It is my goal not only to help people realize how true that statement is but also to make them see the possibilities of what they are able to achieve in their own lives – not just in terms of performance but also fulfillment,” she writes. In January 2016 Moyse summited Mount Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica, with a group of eight members of the Canadian Armed Forces to raise awareness for posttraumatic stress disorder. “I gained great wisdom in climbing Mount Vinson – the most literal of analogies for breaking big goals down into manageable steps. “When you climb a mountain, you can’t allow yourself to get distracted from the path and let your eyes or your mind wander,” writes Moyse.

This self-help book, written for those that need to see their situation in a different way and “own their story,” is laced with bold get-up-and-go style quotes, links to her personal websites, and every page offers a lesson that reminds the reader that they are the driver in charge of their destination. It concludes with a series of bright photographs that capture Moyse and her infectious smile with her family, friends and milestone achievements.

On top of being a multi-sport athlete, the author is now a motivational speaker. She donates her time to many community events and national charities, and has earned the Order of Prince Edward Island, the Queens Jubilee Medal, and the Randy Starkman Olympian Humanitarian Award.

She competed internationally in track cycling, rugby, and bobsleigh in which her team won gold at the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
