Sensory kits available at libraries

- Rebecca Boulter Rebecca Boulter is the literacy and public services librarian at the Summerside Rotary Library at the Inspire Learning Centre.

Recently, on World Autism Day, April 2, the P.E.I. Public Library Service launched a new resource for Islanders called Sensory Kits. These kits contain a variety of sensory tools, toys, and items that can help calm individuals affected by sensory sensitivities such as autism, Alzheimer’s disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dementia. Through close partnerships with the Department of Education and non-profits organizations, such as the Autism Society of Prince Edward Island, the Public Library Service has become increasingly aware of the need for materials and tools to help families affected by sensory sensitivities.

By offering these Sensory Kits, we hope that the library can continue its tradition of supporting families and ensuring that all Islanders have a positive experience accessing and visiting their local library.

Two Sensory Kits are available for borrowing from the Summerside Rotary Library, with 30 kits available at libraries all across P.E.I. Borrowing a Sensory Kit is easy; use your library card to check out a kit located on the second-floor children’s library or place a hold on the library’s online catalogue. Sensory kits can be borrowed for three weeks and do not accrue overdue fines. For more information about services and materials available from the Summerside Rotary Library, visit the library at 57 Central Street in the Inspire Learning Centre, check out our website www.library.pe.ca, check us out on Facebook, or call 902-436-7323.
