Islanders brave rain, wind and cold to run in 2018 Boston Marathon

Wet, cold and wet described the 2018 version of the Boston Marathon on Monday, but Islanders trudged through the weather to decent results. Stanley Chaisson from Charlottetown was the top Islander, finishing in two hours, 44 minutes and 12 seconds, good for 250th overall, while Mike Peterson, also of Charlottetown, crossed the finish line in 3:02:44 (2,093rd overall).

On the women’s side, Charlottetown runners Leanne Vessey made it in 3:21:59 (4,867th overall). Amber Spriggs and Jocelyn Peterson crossed together at 3:21:52, good for 4,917th and 4,918th overall, respectively. In the coldest Marathon in 30 years, hovering around 4 degrees Celsius, Desiree

Linden became to first American woman to win the race in 33 years after completing the race in 2:39:54, and Yuki Kawauchi became the first Japanese man to win in 31

years, running a smart 2:15:58 in the nasty weather. Canadian Krista Duchene placed third (2:44:20) in the women’s division behind Linden and American Sarah Sellers

(2:44:04).

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya set the course of 2:03:02 in 2011, while Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia owns the women’s record of 2:19:59 laid down in 2014.
