Veggie burger love?

Veg P.E.I. holds contest for free veggie burgers from Island restaurants throughout April

While others have spent April indulging in their devotion to beef, one Island group has been giving a boost to restaurants not participating in Burger Love.

Veg P.E.I. has been giving away vouchers for free veggie burgers throughout the month to help to spread the love of food to the vegan and vegetarian community.

Eleven restaurants are participating, and some are donating up to three vouchers each, said Hilary Wood, Veg P.E.I.’s president and co-founder.

“It’s like a win-win-win situation for everyone,” she said, noting the restaurants are also getting exposure for taking part in the giveaway.

Wood stressed the not-forprofit for plant-based folks is not trying to compete with Burger Love.

“We just wanted to put a positive spin on things for people who are plant-based,” she said. “It’s not anti-Burger Love, it’s pro-Island restaurants.”

Stir It Up, a vegan café that recently opened in the new location for Back Alley Records, is one of the participating restaurants.

Co-owner Kevin MacLean said he was happy to contribute.

“I think it’s a great idea, just bringing more awareness to the vegan and vegetarian community. Having that awareness is important for vegetarian restaurants, and I think it’s awesome exposure,” he said. Interested contestants can log on to Facebook to like and share one of Veg P.E.I.’s promotions for a chance to win a free meal.
