Dancing to country classics

Larry Campbell and others provide music for May 11 event at Jack Blanchard Centre

-

A classic country dance is set for the Jack Blanchard Centre in Charlottetown this Friday evening. Larry Campbell, who has many years of experience playing country music, is calling on three other musicians who love to play classic country to join him on stage for the May 11 dance beginning at 8 p.m. Campbell, a singer and musician, has been playing at dances for years at various venues across P.E.I., including several years at the RCAF Wing in Summerside and the Royal Canadian Legion in Charlottetown. More recently, Campbell has been a member of the group Neon Moon.

Joining Campbell to provide the dance music, will be Mike MacGary and Billy Matthews, who play together in the group called The Boys. For the last few years, this band has been providing dancing music at the Royal Canadian Legion in Charlottetown on Saturday nights. This time MacGary will be playing his late father, Joe MacGary’s electric steel, for that classic country sound as well as providing vocal harmonies.

Matthews, a musician like his late dad, Neil Matthews, played on the road while living in Ontario until the family moved back to P.E.I. Here he continued his music as a lead singer and drummer for Urban Outlaws and The Boys. Billy will be sharing the lead vocals as well as playing drums.

Also gracing the stage for the May 11 will be Judy Lowe, whose musical experience goes back to the group, Elliott Wight and his Orchestra. Currently she plays with the Lady Singers of Our Century group, the Winsloe United Church ceilidh group and Dino and the Harmonies. She will be playing keyboard as well as singing harmony.

The dance is a fundraiser for the Holy Redeemer and the Knights of Columbus and is open to those 19 and over. There will be a 50/50 draw with a portion going to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Equipment Fund.

Tickets will be available at the door for $10. Doors open at 7 p.m. to the centre located on Pond Street.
