Artist Rilla Marshall’s handwoven image of Greenwich peninsula joins 12 other pieces purchased by the province for its Art Bank collection.
Marshall said having her work represent the Island in this collection means a great deal.
“Th is Art Bank collection demonstrates the value of visual artists in the examination of our contemporary culture,” she said. “My artwork ‘ Greenwich Peninsula, P. E. I.’ highlights a signifi cant story of change within the Island’s vulnerable coastal landscape. Th rough my handwoven and embroidered work, I strive to translate technical data about our familiar landscape into tangible textiles.”
Th e Art Bank acquires, loans out, and displays professional visual work by Islanders in public spaces. Th is year, 59 applications were submitted to the peer- review jury.
Although the province discontinued its Art Bank investments in 2014, a key action from 2017’ s culture action plan was to renew an- nual investments. Th is year, $ 20,000 worth of art was purchased, and will be followed by a commitment of $ 10,000 yearly purchase over the next four years.
Pieces from the Art Bank will be displayed in reception and high- traffic areas of public buildings, as well as used for education. Th e collection is a result of a joint eff ort between the province’s departments of Education, Early Learning and Culture and Economic Development and Tourism.
