Collisions and speeding part of recent policing matters

Weekly Prince District RCMP report for April 30 to May 6

EDITOR’S NOTE: Th e following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigat­ions undertaken by Prince District RCMP between April 30 to May 6.

Woman taken to hospital after collision

On May 1, around 8 p. m., East Prince RCMP attended the scene of a single- vehicle collision on Route 1A in Bedeque. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a culvert and came to rest in a potato fi eld. Th e vehicle driver, a 64- year- old female, was transporte­d to Prince County Hospital for medical treatment.

Offi cers investigat­e cottage break- in

On May 2, around 12: 30 p. m., East Prince RCMP received a report of a door kicked in at a cottage in Chelton. Upon attending the scene, it was determined this was the second similar occurrence to the residence in recent weeks. Nothing was noted to be missing. Th e investigat­ion is ongoing.

Vehicle damaged

On May 3, West Prince RCMP received a report of damage to a vehicle that had been parked at an apartment building on Duff erin Street in Alberton. Th e damage is believed to have occurred sometime between April 28 and 30, and it appears as though the vehicle was hit by something. Th e investigat­ion is ongoing.

Checkstop in Tignish

On May 3, around 3: 50 p. m., members of the West Prince RCMP organized a checkstop on Church Street in Tignish. Approximat­ely 100 vehicles were checked to detect impaired drivers and to check for violations under the provincial Highway Traffi c Act. Two charges and one written warning was issued to two drivers.

Driver stopped for travelling 100 km over limit

On May 5, around 7: 20 p. m., while on patrol on Route 2 in Mount Pleasant, a member of the East Prince RCMP observed an oncoming vehicle travelling at a high speed. Th e member activated the police vehicle’s emergency lights and siren in an attempt to initiate a traffi c stop. Th e vehicle, a Dodge Caravan, did not immediatel­y slow for police and the radar reading showed the vehicle travelling at 100 kilometres over the posted speed limit.

Th e vehicle eventually came to a stop and the 27- year- old male driver was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police under the criminal code. Th e driver was also charged under the provincial Highway Traffi c Act for driving while suspended.

Th e vehicle was towed and impounded, and the driver was released on documents to appear in court in late June to answer to the charges.
