Three judokas from the Lennox Island Judo Club will be part of the Team P.E.I. delegation that leaves Wednesday, for the national championships in Calgary.

Sisters Lydia and Loren Enman and their cousin, Karlyn Shea, will be representing the Lennox Island club on Team P.E.I.

Sixteen-year-old Shea is currently ranked fourth in Canada in her class, under-18, under-70 kilograms, having placed fourth in an Elite Eight tournament in Montreal late last year. Although she is nursing a rugby injury, Lennox Island coach Robin Enman says the team is optimistic Shea will be able to compete. There are eight athletes entered in her division. This counts as 13-year-old Lydia Enman’s first national although she competed last year as an early bloomer.

She’s entered in the under16, under-44 kg class with five other athletes from across the country.

Her 15-year-old sister, Loren, is heading to her third national, competing in the 20-member under-18, under-63 kg class. “We’re looking to squeak out some wins,” said her father and coach. “She’s had wins at previous tournaments and is looking to string more of them together.”

Coach Enman, who will be part of the coaching staff for P.E.I. at nationals, said members of Team P.E.I. also have their sights set on cracking the Island’s Canada Games team for next year, so there’s lots on the line.

There are eight boys and four girls on Team P.E.I. for the nationals and Charlottetown coach Kent Hardy, who got his start in the sport with the Lennox Island Club, will be competing in the Ne-Waza tournament. Shea will be competing on Friday in Calgary while other members of the Lennox Island club will see action on Saturday.
